Testing Job Candidates a New Trend

IJob seekers' skills may need to ace the test to get hired.n today’s job market, having a college degree is just one component that makes you deemed qualified for a job. But no matter what your resume says about your skills and abilities, you need to be able to show your value to employers. Job candidates need to be prepared to face another level of exams to get hired.

A New York Times op-ed column by Thomas L. Freidman delves into the idea of testing job candidates to make sure they can do what the job requires. He writes:

“So, more employers are designing their own tests to measure applicants’ skills. And they increasingly don’t care how those skills were acquired: home schooling, an online university, a massive open online course, or Yale. They just want to know one thing: Can you add value?”

In this column, Freidman focuses on the online tests created by one company, HireArt, that uses written and videos tests to make sure candidates can do what the job requires. The New York Times piece includes a sample question for a social media manager job, for example:

“Kanye West just released a new fashion collection. You can see it here. Imagine you had to write a tweet promoting this collection. What would your tweet be?”

The New York Times column and other news we’ve seen about testing job candidates makes a couple of things clear to us about what it takes to find a job today.

Your resume may look great and you may have finally earned that college degree (congrats!), but as a job candidate, expect to be tested about how you can put your college knowledge to use. You don’t want to exaggerate your know-how, because a company could uncover your lack of knowledge quickly and omit you from consideration. As a plus, if your skills outshine another candidate, it may not matter where or how you got your degree, but that you can do the job.

Being informed about trends in the hiring can make your more informed as a candidate, and prepared to ace the interview and land the job.
