I love the way this quote is set – in a seemingly endless circle. “If you always do what you have done, you will always get what you got. If you always do what you have done….” And so it is that this same, cyclical pattern of behavior produces the same, cyclical results.
In any organization, when someone asks, “Why are we doing that?” you will at some point hear, “Because that’s the way it’s always been done.” And once upon a time, there may have been a very good reason for doing it that way. But tried-and-true methods aren’t always best.
So often we feel trapped by our circumstances, trapped in the lives we’ve made for ourselves. But it’s not too late to get out of whatever hole we’re in.
If you want to change the results you’re getting – out of school, out of your job, out of life – you must change the way you do things. Different actions produce different results.
So maybe it’s time to shake things up. If you’re unsatisfied at work, try asking for some new projects or a raise, or gather your courage to look for a new job altogether. Or you could do something totally wild and crazy and go back to school.
You’ll never know the amazing things you can achieve until you put yourself out there and try something new.
