Medical Billing & Coding – Diploma
The UMA Diploma program can be completed in approximately 10 months and offers the basic core courses necessary for individuals seeking successful entry into the growing healthcare field.
At 39 semester credits, the education and training focus is primarily on how to process healthcare claims, medical records, and the accurate coding of medical and surgical procedures using proper terminology. In addition, students will learn software systems used in the field.
Potential entry-level job position titles for diploma graduates may include Medical Billing Specialist, Medical Coder and Insurance Claims Analyst or other positions in private practices and healthcare providers or facilities. Students also prepare to sit for the Certified Professional Coding (CPC) exam offered through the American Academy of Professional Coding (AAPC).
Medical Billing & Coding – Associates Degree
UMA's Medical Billing and Coding Associate of Science (AS) program incorporates the core courses of our diploma program while providing further courses in general education and other specialized skills necessary for success in a wide range of positions in the growing medical billing and coding practice field. At 63 semester credits, this associate degree program can be completed in approximately 17 months. Students are prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coding (CPC) exam offered through the American Academy of Professional Coding (AAPC).
According to the Medical Group Management Association, Associate graduates with some experience may qualify for positions which include Office Manager, Assistant Administrator, Billing Supervisor, or other positions in hospitals, clinics, and private practices or other healthcare facilities.

Medical Office and Billing Specialist - Diploma
Medical Office and Billing Specialists combine skill sets from both Medical Billing and Coding and Medical Administrative Assistant to create a kind of “best of both worlds” career objective. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for Medical Office and Billing Specialists are expected to grow between 19% and 27% through 2018.*
The Medical Office and Billing Specialist program prepares students to perform front office medical administrative procedures with a focus on the expanded function of insurance and patient billing and the processing of health care claims.
During your 10-month training in the Medical Office and Billing Specialist Diploma program at UMA, you will receive training to:
- Understand medical terminology and software applications for reimbursement systems
- Manage medical records

Health Science Associate - concentration in Pharmacy Technician
Graduates of the Health Science A.S. will:
- Earn an associate degree with an area of concentration.
- Take general education courses in English, math, biology and social sciences.
- Take elective courses in topics including accounting, computers, psychology, patient relations and more.
- Prepare to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam.
- Have potential for greater earnings.

The UMA Pharmacy Technician program offers a career-focused curriculum that can help you acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence to support licensed pharmacists by assisting with counter dispensing operations and prescription preparation at retail pharmacies, mail-order pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. In approximately 14-22 months, you can learn how to:
- Stock and inventory prescriptive and over-the-counter medications.
- Maintain written or computerized patient medication records.
- Count or pour medications into dispensing containers.
- Manage the cash register and/or billing
- Assemble a twenty-four hour supply of medication for each patient.
- Re-package medications
- Prepare commercially unavailable medications.
- Deliver medications to patient rooms.
- Establish and maintain patient profiles.
- Prepare insurance claim forms.
