Coahoma Community College
3240 Friars Point Road
Clarksdale, MS 38614
This 99 acre campus located about four miles north of the city of Clarksdale, Mississippi, was originally established in 1924 as an agricultural high school for African Americans. Today the campus has expanded its academic offerings significantly and has evolved into a powerful educational force in the surrounding community. The school offers both transfer and vocational training programs. On the liberal arts side, Coahoma offers its students a wide array of associate degree programs that can easily transfer to a larger four-year school.
Ranging from standard general studies programs in areas like English and Business Administration to programs not typically found on the community college level -- think Speech Pathology and Radio and Television Broadcasting -- this school is the perfect place to start your education. As a member of the Mississippi Delta Rural Healthcare Partnership, Coahoma is also able to offer additional support services for students in the math, science, and healthcare field such as the annual Summer Nursing Residency program, a week-long camp for nursing students funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Thanks to partnerships with 15 workforce development centers located throughout the state, Coahoma offers technical and skills training to both students and business owners in a variety of locations. Technical programs in areas such as Barber Instructor Training, Medical Office Technology, and Respiratory Care are supplemented with on-site hands-on training, allowing students to graduate with both a degree/certificate and workforce experience.
In addition to technical programs of study, Coahoma provides students with resume-writing workshops, job skills assessments tests, English as a Second Language training, computer skills courses, career counseling, and employability skills workshops. For the surrounding community, Coahoma provides GED preparation classes, stress management workshops, life skills training, parenting classes, remedial math, writing, and English courses, and science and technology curricula for area middle school students.
Outside of the classroom, Coahoma hosts 5 varsity athletic sports, a cheerleading team, and a campus-wide intramural sports program. Students also have the opportunity to join any of the eleven on-campus academic clubs and organizations, including a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honors fraternity for community college students.
