With campus locations in Bessemer and Birmingham, Alabama, Lawson State Community College offers academic and technical programs of study to students from across the state through in-class and online learning. After a recent merger with Bessemer Technical College, the school is now able to offer a strong array of training programs backed by state-of-the-art facilities. One of the strongest programs Lawson State Community College offers is in the area of car care. The school maintains partnerships with Ford/ASSET, Toyota/T-Ten, GM/ASEP, offering students the opportunity to work with the same materials and equipment they'll have available in the real world.
Lawson State Community College also operates several pre-professional programs (six in the area of engineering alone!) and all students will have their choice between day, evening, and online courses. Lawson State Community College also operates an extensive Small Business Center designed to help local business owners bone up on the skills they'll need to succeed. Resources here include grant writing classes, business plan development workshops, payroll courses, basic internet skills assessments, and word processing and spreadsheet reinforcement classes.
When classes are over, Lawson State Community College students turn to the eight sports teams on campus (men's and women's basketball) and to the selection of student organizations and clubs, including the school's student government association, a chapter of Kappa Beta Delta international business honors society, and a campus chapter of Skills USA vocational leadership group. Each year, Lawson State Community College hosts on-campus social and cultural events including an annual Christmas musical, a homecoming celebration, President's Brunch, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.
To help students achieve their full academic potential, Lawson State Community College also offers free academic advising, personal counseling, career counseling, financial aid advisement, and placement testing for first-year students. Low-income, first-generation, or students with physical disabilities will have additional support services thanks to the school's TRIO program.
