Created by Virginia's State Board for Community Colleges in 1967, Virginia Highlands Community College now stands as one of the 23 community colleges that constitute the Virginia Community College System. Although the school only enrolled approximately 300 students when its doors first opened, it has continued to grow in leaps and bounds over the years. Today this Virginia college serves more than 3,000 students (as of the 2005-06 school year) and employs nearly 300 faculty and staff members. And while its original campus consisted of three buildings that totaled 53,294 square feet in size, Virginia Highlands Community College's campus today encompasses 100 acres and six main buildings that consist of 84,200 square feet.
In order to meet the needs of its large student body -- while living up to its impressive growth and development -- this Virginia college has grown to offer both workforce training programs and associate degree programs. From courses in subjects such as air conditioning and refrigeration, general engineering technology, and Web design, to classes in dental hygiene, hospitality and tourism, accounting, and information systems technology there's a program to satisfy nearly anyone's interests and goals for the future.

Individual programs within this Virginia college have been accredited by outside institutions. For example, the nursing program is accredited the National League for Nursing and approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing, while the emergency medical service technology program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs.
Virginia Highlands Community College is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges, as well as the Southern Association of Community, Junior, and Technical Colleges.
