5 Ways Back to School Can Lead You Back to Success

happy studentWhether you're facing a job crisis or you've been living with a lackluster career for far too long, it's time to make a change. Because job happiness and security are attainable goals - and education can take you there. Check out these five ways going back to school can lead you back to success.

1. Embrace a new attitude.
If you've been stuck in a dead-end job for a while, chances are you've lost any enthusiasm you ever had for career pursuits. The longer you stay, the more powerless you feel to change your circumstances. But going back to school can renew your belief that there are exciting career opportunities out there and that your work can actually be a source of inspiration rather than degradation - which will give your attitude a major overhaul. And, as we know, attitude is everything.

2. End up in an exciting new career.
Not many people stick with the same career all the way through retirement. Whether you're getting laid off or you're just ready for a change, going back to school opens doors to brand new career paths. And some of today's fastest-growing careers (e.g., dental hygienist, physical therapist assistant) only require a two-year school commitment.

3. Get the job title change you've been hoping for.
If you love your industry but you can't stand your current job, going back to school can help you get a higher position or make a lateral move to a different area of the industry. Associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, advanced degrees, and professional certifications can all help you get ahead in your career.

4. Give your salary a boost (for the better!).
If you want to take your salary up, up, and away, going back to school is the right way to go. In fact, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2008, bachelor's degree holders earned 28 percent more than those with an associate degree, 53 percent more than those with a high school diploma, and 96 percent more than those without a high school diploma. Education is a sound financial investment.

5. Change your life.
Going back to school can change your life because it can change you. Education opens your mind to new ideas and new ways of thinking. It helps you become a confident, well-rounded individual with a wide range of interests. Higher education also equips you with communication skills that are vital to personal and professional success. You'll never regret the time you spent on the self-improvement inherent in higher education.

No matter what the cause of your career woes, going back to school can lead you back to happiness and success.
