Architectural engineers, also known as civil engineers, ensure the roads, buildings, highways and various structures around town are safe, repaired properly, and in great shape. As the population continues to grow, the need to maintain the infrastructures throughout the U.S. is increasing. Therefore, the demand for civil engineers will continue to increase.
What does an architectural / civil engineer do?
Engineers use the principles of math and science to find economical solutions to technical issues. This field links scientific discoveries and commercial applications to meet the needs of society and consumers. Engineers develop new products, where they specify functional requirements, design and test, produce final design, evaluate the designs effectiveness, safety, cost, and reliability. This process is used in the development of many products.
In addition, engineers work in testing, production, and maintenance. They would supervise production, determine cause of component failures, and test products for quality. It is also their job to estimate cost and time of projects. The use of computers are essential to the engineers job. There used to produce and analyze designs, used to test how structures, machines and systems work, generate parts specifications, monitor product quality, and process efficiency.
Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridge, and water supply and sewage systems. During the design process, they have to consider cost of construction, expected lifetime of a project, government regulations, and possible environmental hazards. This type of engineering is considered one of the oldest, which includes many specialties. These specialties are structural, water resources, construction, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. Civil or architectural engineers are employed in administrative and supervisory roles andmay also take the helm across a variety of design, construction, research and teaching projects.

The median annual salary for civil engineers was $ 68,600 in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with the highest 25 percent earning $86,260 annually and the highest 10 percent earning $104, 420 annually. As a group engineers, earn the highest average starting salaries among those with bachelor degrees. The average starting salary, in 2007, for a civil engineer with a bachelor degree was $48,509, master's degree holders made $48,280, and Ph.D. holders $62,275. The civil engineer employment opportunities are expected to growth by 18 percent. The opportunities will vary by region.
In 2006, federal, state and local governments employed 12 percent of engineers. Half of these engineers were employed by the federal government in various U.S. departments including defense, transportation, agriculture, interior, energy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
