When it comes to helping hold a company's computer network together, Eric Tampellini's the network technician you need.
Tampellini's day begins with backing up all the data from the previous day. "Making sure that all the information is recorded is crucial in the event that the system crashes," explains Tampellini. "After preparing backup, I take a look at the help desk log."
If there are any problems reported that couldn't be resolved over the phone, the desktop support department gets involved. Once all other options are exhausted, the problem gets referred to a network technician -- Tampellini. "Once I get involved," he begins, "I go into the application that created the user's account and try to see what is causing the problem."
Since there are a multitude of "technical difficulties" that could occur, Tampellini's challenge is to narrow down them down to one cause and deliver a solution.
What You Need To Know
Tampellini hasn't always known that information technology (IT) was the career path he was going to take. In fact, he spent eight years in the military before deciding that he needed a career change. Having no experience or training in the IT field, but attracted by its vast career opportunities, Tampellini enrolled in a training school called NexTech Training Solutions, which provided him with the skills and certifications that he needed.
If you, too, are intrigued by the information technology field, Tampellini suggests that you take as many computer classes as possible and looking into earning your certifications early on. "By getting certified, you increase your value tremendously."
Once you get to college, he adds, you should choose a major that's related to computer science and look for an opportunity to gain hands-on skills through an internship. "That kind of experience will open many doors," attests Tampellini.
How Much You'll Make
According to Tampellini, the IT field is full of endless possibilities. A salary for an entry-level employee with an associate degree can range from $34,000 to $60,000. With more advanced degrees, one can command a salary ranging upwards of $125,000.Tampellini also notes that the job prospects in this field are tremendous, especially with a little experience under your belt. The need for skilled IT employees with technical, computer know-how and ambition is in great demand.
What You'll Feel
Tampellini loves his job, but admits that the best part of his career is dealing with and overcoming the numerous challenges he encounters everyday. "I like being an asset to a company," he says.
He does admit, however, that his job often demands long hours. "The hours need to be put in from time to time when there is a major problem," he says.
A Final Thought
Interested in Information Technology as a career? Tampellini has a bit of advice for you: "It's a lot of hard work, but worth the reward. If you are looking for financial security, this is definitely the right industry. And, if you are looking for a challenge, you will find one everyday!"
