Porter and Chester Institute: CollegeSurfing.com Featured School of the Week - May 5, 2008
by Amanda Fornecker

Porter and Chester Institute

, a New England school with lots of certificate choices, has been serving students since 1946. Several campuses give students options to work toward their certification so that they'll be on their way to a successful career.

At the Porter and Chester Institute, students can be a part of at least nine different programs. Some of these include computer and network technology, HVACR, dental assisting, and medical assisting, among others. Each program has different requirements for hours, credits, and length. The career school's seven campuses, located in Connecticut and Massachusetts, only offer a select number of programs. But the main goal of the Porter and Chester Institute is "preparing students for needed occupations," according to their website.

It's fairly simple to begin a program at the Porter and Chester Institute. Rather than the common two- or three-semester years, the Porter and Chester Institute offers classes to students that start in January, April, July, and October. This not only ensures a convenient starting point, but also will keep you interested with different classes all year long.

Prospective students of this career school need only have a high school diploma or GED. Once students apply, they will meet with a Career Program Specialist in order to discuss their goals and expectations of enrolling at a program at the Porter and Chester Institute. In addition, these applicants will take an admissions test to prove their competency for programs at this career school.

In order for students to go out properly in the real world, the Porter and Chester Institute trains its students for success. This is done through resume preparation, interview skills, and support throughout the job search process.

The Porter and Chester Institute was formed through the merge of two schools in 1976. These were the Porter School of Engineering Design and the Chester Institute for Technical Education. The two schools were combined and then curriculum was changed to be a standard at both campuses, which were located in Connecticut. From there, the school only grew.

The Porter and Chester Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of career schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Accreditation is extremely important for a school to have because it means that a school is governed by a set of standards that relate to the industry. The programs at the Porter and Chester Institute are regularly checked to ensure that the curriculum is the best for what the real world job entails. In fact, the medical assisting and dental assisting programs at the Porter and Chester Institute have their own accreditations, separate from the main school.

For a variety of choices, including flexibility, appropriate program, and campus location, the Porter and Chester Institute is certainly one to look into on the East Coast. Medical assisting, dental assisting, and other technical programs make this career school one to certainly check out.
