Computer support specialists support users by providing technical support and troubleshooting for all aspects of computer hardware and software. These individuals are highly trained to solve many different kinds of computer issues -- anything from small glitches to major system crashes.

Computer support specialists can find jobs in a variety of industries; the main rule of thumb is that wherever there are computer users, there is a need for ongoing technical support. There are industries, however, that have more of a need for computer support than others, including education, finance, health care, insurance, and telecommunications.

Individuals who want to pursue careers as computer support specialists need to have regular training in order to keep up with the latest computer technology; fortunately, there are many programs available. While a college degree is not necessarily required for a position as a computer support specialist, many people do choose to work toward associate or Bachelor's degrees in computer science. Other options include certificate and diploma programs in specific areas of computer programming and technology.

In addition to the need for up-to-date computer skills, computer support specialists also require strong skills in analysis, problem solving, and interpersonal communication.

Demand for computer support specialists

The outlook is good for employment as a computer support specialist or system administrator. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of computer support specialists will increase by 18 percent by the year 2016. This is greater than the average for many other industries. The reason for this sharp increase is that as more offices become more dependent on computers and technology, the more they will also need ongoing technical support from a computer support specialist.
