Hair Design Schools Can Lead to Interesting Paths

If you're wondering what the path to a hair design career looks like, take a look at the one Robert Hallowell has followed. From hair design schools to lots of hands-on learning, do you think you're ready to follow his route?
Hallowell, the Los Angeles, CA-native, chose to study at one of the top hair design schools, the Vidal Sassoon Academy, as well as at Pierce College. Today, he's a professional hairdresser for film, TV and print, and it's taken him around the world to places like Morocco, Thailand, Europe, Canada as well as many locations across the U.S. And, his celebrity client list boasts Courtney Cox, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Lucy Liu, to name a few. See what he has to share about hair design schools and the road to celeb hair design status.
Q: What should prospective stylists consider when researching hair design schools that will set them apart? A: Choose the best school for your basic training. I also suggest after graduation to take some additional classes in the areas that you would like to excel in. For example, if you like doing color, take a color intensive class. Additional training at hair design schools will always set you apart.
Q: What else can students do to improve their skills beyond school? A: Post school, practice practice practice! Assist a stylist whose work you admire.
As I mentioned above, take additional training at hair design schools in the areas you would like to specialize in.
Q: What is the potential of hair design careers as far as job opportunities and various jobs you can do? A: There are many job opportunities from salons of all calibers to my type of work, which is film, TV, and print hairstyling, as well as my celebrity clients whose hair I maintain for them. The earnings differ from salon to salon...a good hairdresser in a busy salon can make several hundred thousand a year.
Q: What's it like to be a stylist to the stars?>br?A: I am lucky in that the people I work with are all wonderful! Even still it's hard work though. For instance, I am shooting with Courtney Cox currently -- she is so much fun to be with all day (and our days can be as long as 14 to 18 hours!), although it is a lot of pressure doing the hair of someone of that caliber.
With regard to funny stories, while checking Jennifer Love Hewitt's hair color outside in the daylight, someone caught a picture of us, both very relaxed looking and it showed up as almost a half page in Star magazine!
