Lose Your 9-to-5 Job
by Robyn Tellefsen
If you're one of those people who dreads being chained behind a desk every day, consider an anti-

9-to-5 job

. With the right career training, you can beat burnout before it even begins.

Anti-9-to-5 job: Graphic designer
Burnout buster: Freelance graphic designers typically work on a contract basis, which means their workdays are constantly changing based on the needs of different assignments.
Train today: A bachelor's degree is required for most graphic design positions, though some entry-level technical positions may only require an associate degree. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits colleges with graphic design degree programs.

Anti-9-to-5 job: Massage therapist
Burnout buster: Massage therapists in private practice divide their days among different settings, whether in a client's home or office, and de-stress in the atmosphere of relaxation. They typically give massages less than 40 hours per week.
Train today: Aspiring therapists can get trained at one of about 300 massage therapy schools or career training programs accredited by a state board or department of education-certified accrediting agency.

Anti-9-to-5 job: Preschool teacher
Burnout buster: Instead of lecturing or following strict lesson plans, preschool teachers help children learn through purposeful play. Their days consist of telling stories, playing games, building blocks, finger-painting, and singing songs. Plus, they get the summers off!
Train today: Some states require that preschool teachers hold a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, while others only require an associate degree. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education accredits teacher education programs across the U.S.

Anti-9-to-5 job: Speech-language pathologist
Burnout buster: Speech-language pathologists who work on a contract basis deliver services in clients' homes. That translates into meeting lots of new people and seeing plenty of new places.
Train today: All states require a master's degree to practice speech-language pathology. More than 200 colleges and universities offer graduate programs in speech-language pathology that are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Anti-9-to-5 job: Yoga instructor
Burnout buster: Yoga instructors enjoy a lot more autonomy than behind-the-desk drones. They can exercise creative freedom in their class planning, and they may even travel to different gyms or clients' homes throughout the day.
Train today: The Yoga Alliance has established education standards at the 200- and 500-hour levels; it also registers career training schools that train students to these standards.

When you head back to school for career training today, you can head off tomorrow's 9-to-5 nightmare.
