Marketing Meets the World of Celebs

by Diane Anselmo
Did you ever wonder how all those celebs glamming it up at parties wind up on the front page of your newspaper's entertainment section? Or, better yet, how they got invited to that hot party in the first place? The CollegeBound Network chatted with Tina Gaerlan, a marketing manager in the entertainment industry, about her exciting career...getting paid to schmooze with celebs.

Working for both a New York night club and a music production company has Tina's day filled to capacity. "I do a lot of research and find out when certain celebrities are coming into town," she says. Then, Tina puts her communication skills to the test by inviting publicists and their celebrity clients to events she organizes.

That's just phase one. Once she has secured the stars, she must put the word out to various entertainment media to get them to cover the event. "I am constantly on the phone," she explains.

The Road to Career Stardom
Since high school, Tina was always involved in the entertainment industry, playing a highly active role in the Thespian Society. At college, Tina majored in marketing. While any major that interests you will get you on your way, says Tina, consider a concentration in marketing, communications, public relations, or other related fields for this type of career.

And, of course, Tina highly recommends participating in internships. She did three over the course of her college career, all of which, she says, helped her discover her career path.
