New York Film Academy

Turn your filmmaking dreams into a reality at the New York Film Academy. The film school offers a variety of filmmaking programs that will get you on your way to all things Hollywood!

The New York Film Academy was founded by film producer Jerry Sherlock in order to give students an accelerated and intensive program that would really prepare them to go out and make great films. "Ours is the most hands-on film and acting school in the world," says Sherlock. "People like Steven Spielberg and Kevin Kline have sent their kids here."

There are many different programs at the New York Film Academy that range in length, depth, and mastery level. Some programs are one- or two-year conservatories, master's programs, and short-term workshops at various places like Harvard University, Paris, and other locations.

There are two main campuses of the New York Film Academy. One campus is located in New York City, while a campus with a new digital journalism program with NBC has started in Los Angeles. Most programs in California are held at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Summer programs can take students to Florence, Rome, London, and more.

Programs at the New York Film Academy are plentiful. For those thinking of throwing their hat into the main ring in front of the camera there's an acting for film program, which gives its students on-camera experience and short intensive programs that lead to a nice portfolio of clips to choose from. Getting behind the camera and behind-the-scenes is also possible at the New York Film Academy in the producing, screenwriting, editing, and animation programs.

Although each has different requirements, all programs teach students the proper history and techniques, while giving them hands-on experience. "Students that attend our school are typically very independent doers," says Sherlock. Age range varies, but they are usually around 18-25. And the admissions process is relatively simple, as the New York Film Academy is an open admissions institution.

Film equipment is something that sets the New York Film Academy apart from other institutions, according to Sherlock. "We have more film equipment than any school in the world and have the ability to turn around in a flash if a problem does occur," he says. "You get hands-on experience on the camera from day one and every student writes, shoots, directs, and does basically everything."

The New York Film Academy has many different programs to get into. "It's hard work," says Sherlock. "You have to have the passion and really want to sacrifice and give it 150 percent." It is then that students can begin their film careers, go out, and make great films for the rest of the world to see. It all begins with a film education.
