President Obama Endorses Careers in Service

In light of the challenges facing our nation, President Obama has issued a call to service for each and every citizen. He believes that we, as Americans, have a responsibility to commit to service in our communities. What stronger commitment can we make than to cultivate a career in service?

Career in service: Clinical social worker
Call to service: Assess and treat individuals with mental illness or substance abuse problems through therapy, outreach, crisis intervention, social rehabilitation, and supportive services.
Required for service: A master's degree in social work and a professional license
Opportunities for service: Employment is expected to grow much faster than average (30 percent) by 2016; job prospects should be favorable.
Average salary for service: $36,640

Career in service: Correctional treatment specialist
Call to service: Counsel criminal offenders and create rehabilitation plans to follow when they are no longer in prison or on parole.
Required for service: A bachelor's degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or related field
Opportunities for service: Employment is expected to grow as fast as average (11 percent) by 2016; job prospects should be excellent.
Average salary for service: $44,510

Career in service: Emergency medical technician
Call to service: Provide immediate medical care and transport patients to medical facilities.
Required for service: A high school diploma and formal certification
Opportunities for service: Employment is expected to grow faster than average (19 percent) by 2016; job prospects should be favorable.
Average salary for service: $28,400

Career in service: Health educator
Call to service: Educate individuals and communities about behaviors that promote healthy living and prevent diseases.
Required for service: A bachelor's degree in health education or related field; possibly a master's degree

Career in service: Marriage and family therapist
Call to service: Work with individuals, families, and couples to modify perceptions and behaviors, enhance communication and understanding, resolve emotional conflicts, and help prevent crises.

Career in service: Special education teacher
Call to service: Teach children with disabilities, modifying general education curricula to meet individual needs.
