The Pro Bono Paralegal Network
by Robyn Tellefsen
How would you like to be part of an occupation that unites you with professionals around the globe? Not only does the

paralegal

profession provide an excellent support network for you, it also affords you the opportunity to make an impact on paralegals near and far--even overseas.

Through the Navy Legalman and Military Paralegal Outreach Program, established by the Pro Bono Committee of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), civilian paralegals "adopt" paralegals from the Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marines, and send them bimonthly care packages that show support and gratitude for their service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The community service program, which began in 2005, provides a unique opportunity for paralegals to bring joy and comfort to their military paralegal counterparts serving overseas. In addition to the psychological support, paralegals also send information and news regarding the civilian paralegal profession.

When paralegals are first deployed, they receive a package from the Navy Legalman and Military Paralegal Outreach Program that includes articles about the program, the "National Paralegal Reporter," other association newsletters, and "Legal Assistant Today." After that, Navy Legalmen and Military Paralegals receive personalized care packages, which include such items as books, food, games, hygiene products, puzzles, snacks, and personal cards and notes. There are now 25 paralegal member associations of the NFPA as well as three individual or sustaining members supporting the program, sending as many as 45 care packages every other month.

The nationally supported community service program is also designed to jump-start inactive pro bono paralegal programs. Pro bono simply refers to quality legal services that enhance access to justice for people with limited means. Community service refers to unpaid service that is volunteered by an individual to benefit an organization, community, or its institutions that are provided through the direction of a nonprofit organization.

The Navy Legalman and Military Paralegal Outreach Program is open to participation by NFPA member associations, sustaining members, and individual members. Paralegal associations not affiliated with NFPA may contact their local military base to find out how to support deployed paralegals.

Pursue paralegal studies, and join a network of professionals making a difference around the world.
