What Types of People Are Best Suited to Online Learning?

by Robyn Tellefsen
types of learners for online degreesEducation is for everyone ... at least it should be. The principle of universal access is at the core of the online education philosophy. Everyone should have a chance to learn, even those whose schedules and lifestyles make it inconvenient to do so. Online education is the 21st century way of making the implausible plausible.

Business travelers
Catching the daily red-eye to Dulles may help you rack up frequent flyer miles, but it certainly won't make it convenient for you to earn the degree you've always wanted. How can you possibly commit to class in Chicago when you spend half your week shuttling between the Windy City and Washington, D.C.? With online learning, business travelers can power up a laptop on a plane, in a hotel room, even in the backseat of a car. When you're motivated to make your education a priority, online education makes it a possibility.

Cops
Cops, along with other city workers such as firefighters and sanitation workers, are prone to working crazy hours, rotating from one shift to the next. Lack of a consistent schedule makes it difficult to enroll in courses at a brick-and-mortar institution, since attending class half the time isn't conducive to actually learning the material. Online learning, on the other hand, fits perfectly into a schedule that cyclical. You can click into class whenever you're free, and make up for the days when working double shifts is beyond your control.

Military personnel
Men and women serving the United States overseas and domestically are committed to the cause of freedom, and many are dedicated to earning a degree as well. Online learning helps them do both. Why should they have to wait until their service commitment is complete to further their higher education goals? Whether stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, or somewhere stateside, members of the military can pursue their education remotely.

Moms
Moms, and anyone else with family responsibilities, are perfectly positioned to reap the benefits of online education. After all, what mom can commit to being in class at 3:00 p.m. when she needs to pick her kids up from school at the same time? It's hard to find an education program to match the madness of a mommy schedule. Plus, moms are so busy with their kids' activities that they don't have time to sit in traffic to get to class. Online learning takes away the variables, giving moms a sure thing -- an education format that they can fit into their own schedule, instead of the other way around.

When it comes down to it, there is no one specific type of person best suited to online learning. This flexible education format is effective for the young and the old, the outgoing and the shy, the entry-level and the CEO. So whoever you are, and whatever your station in life, online education may just be the best match for you.
