In the pre-computer era, most new product drawings were provided by drafters -- mechanically inclined employees armed with pencils, rulers, and protractors. Today, the art of drafting has evolved with the aid of computer-assisted design software. One popular program is AutoCAD, which allows users to draft complex 2-D and 3-D models.

AutoCAD technicians provide their employers with technical drawings of new products, based on the specification of engineers, architects, or scientists.
