Computer Software Engineer: Duties & Job Market
by Barbara Bellesi
Computer software engineers are the magicians who create the applications and systems that power our computers. They are not only on the cutting edge of technology, but they are also looking forward years into the future, preparing for new and improved generations of technology. Duties of computer software engineers
Skilled in computer science and math, computer software engineers design, develop, test, and evaluate software and systems based on the needs of the consumer. There are many types of software, including operating systems, word processing, business and accounting applications, and computer games. Computer software engineers are not alone in their work--they are often part of a hardworking team that includes other engineers, designers, manufacturers, and marketers who work together to deliver a useful product to consumers.
Where to find computer software engineer jobs
Computer software engineers often work for software vendors or computer consulting firms. Because much of a computer engineer's work is on a project basis, a number of individuals work as independent contractors. Telecommuting is a very popular way for computer engineers to work; many consulting firms are actually virtual offices, with employees in home offices all over the world.
Where to find computer software engineer programs
While experience with computer systems is of paramount importance, most employers do prefer that applicants also have at least a bachelor's degree. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 75 percent of computer engineers earned a bachelor degree or higher. Many software vendors offer certification programs; while this is a good way to stay abreast of current software and systems, certification is usually not the only requirement for many jobs in the field.
Demand for computer software engineers
The computer industry is and will continue to be an excellent field for employment and career advancement. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of computer software engineers will increase by 38 percent by 2016--a much faster rate than most occupations.
