Computer systems analysts help companies and organizations maintain technology, as well as add on the latest updates and applications to existing systems. If there is a problem with a system, or if a company has outgrown the services of an existing system, a computer systems analyst works to meet the technology needs of the company or organization. Those who work with companies to choose the most appropriate computer system are called system architects, while those who work to create proper systems are called system designers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were more than half a million computer systems analysts in 2006, and that number is expected to grow substantially over the next decade. Any industry that requires daily use of computer technology is one that will hire computer systems analysts. The majority of analysts work in the computer systems design industry, while others work in many other industries that include government, insurance, finance, health care, management, and higher education. A number of analysts are self-employed as contractors and consultants.

Although individuals can receive substantial hands-on training, many employers prefer that new hires earn at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, or management information systems. There are many colleges and universities offering programs in computer science and other related fields. Students can earn associate, bachelor's, and graduate degrees in the field of computers. Additionally, many vocational and technical schools offer diploma and certificate programs in computer science. Besides classroom education, those who wish to be computer systems analysts need on-the-job training and must be up to date in the latest computer applications.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for computer system analysts is supposed to increase by 29 percent by the year 2016. This increase in employment is a result of industries using more advanced technologies, including Internet and intranet systems.
