Duties of a digital artist

When you think of digital art, you may think of graphic design. Graphic design involves the use of computers to produce art, including logos, fonts, and other images that are seen on a computer screen. Another popular kind of digital art involves website design. While websites are first and foremost informative, not all websites are made the same; usually, the most attractive and innovative websites are made by those with an artistic background.

Where to find digital artist jobs

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 60 percent of artists are self-employed. Sometimes it is preferable for artists, particularly graphic designers, to freelance rather than work for one company because it allows artists to remain true to their craft and pursue the work that they most want to do.

Digital and multimedia artists can find work at any company that requires web site maintenance, graphic design, layout, or any other task that requires computer graphics or artistic skills. Some industries that require digital or multimedia artists are newspapers, magazines, television studios, and any other business that wishes to have an increased presence via a website.

Programs for digital artists

While talent is the number one requirement for a career in art, there are many programs for artists, in particular digital and multimedia artists. Students can go to liberal arts school, an institute, or a conservatory to earn an associate, bachelor's, master's, and even a doctoral degree. Those who wish to teach usually work toward a master's degree or doctorate. Art programs at a liberal arts school typically include a core program in the arts and sciences, while programs at an institute or a conservatory are more concentrated, usually culminating in a bachelor of fine arts or a master of fine arts degree.

Demand for digital artists

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for artists in general is projected to grow 16 percent by the year 2016. It is likely that digital and multimedia artists may experience an even higher demand, because there is new and improved technology every year. However, there are always more talented people than there are positions for which to hire them, so the field of art will always remain very competitive.
