Duties of an electrical designer
As an electrical designer, you'll apply your practical knowledge of electrical systems by preparing wiring diagrams for installers. Electrical designers specify the layout, materials, and procedures needed to implement a new electrical system. Electrical designers may work in conjunction with electrical engineers or architects, and they often use computer-assisted design (CAD) programs to complete their technical drawings.

Where to find electrical designer jobs
Electrical designers can find a variety of ways to apply their drafting skills. In construction, electrical designers design the layout of lighting, fire alarm, cable, telephone, and security systems. At a utilities company, electrical designers develop instructions used to conduct electricity from distribution lines to consumers. Jobs opportunities are also readily available in communication centers and power plants.

Electrical designer programs
Math skills and CAD expertise are important, but electrical engineers who have completed postsecondary training will have an extra edge over their competitors. Drafting programs are available at many technical and community colleges, and some electrical designers eventually pursue Bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering to further their career. Electrical designers can also earn certification through the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA).
