How Much Does a Web Development Degree Cost?
by Robyn Tellefsen
Do you have what it takes to become a Web developer? Education requirements range from an associate degree to a graduate degree, though bachelor's degrees have become the norm in Web development. A four-year degree will prepare you for an array of professional opportunities in the information, design, and technology-based communications industries. A key factor in how much a web development degree will cost varies by the number of credits required to complete the program. You might assume that an associate degree program is 60 credits and a bachelor's degree program is 120, but some associate degrees programs are actually 90 credits and some bachelor's degree programs are 180. Web development schools may offer diploma and certificate programs as well, which are usually about 30 credits, or half of an associate degree.
How Much Is Tuition for a Web Development Degree?
A community college may charge $200 or less per credit for a web development degree, while some vocational/technical schools charge Web development tuition upwards of $350 per credit. If tuition is $350 per credit and 180 credits are required for a four-year degree, the total Web development tuition would be $63,000.
Some potential Web development degree costs to be aware of:
· Web development tuition and fees may vary between brick-and-mortar and online programs. Since the school you're considering may offer courses through both media, be sure to find out exactly what you'll be charged for either medium or for a blended learning program.
· Rarely, a school will charge a flat fee rather than a per-credit fee, which can be tricky if you don't complete the program or if you simply take a break from your studies.
· Some schools do not publish their tuition and fees online. In that case, call the school and ask them to send you all the information in writing. You need full financial disclosure about the cost of a Web development degree up front.
If a school can't give you a clear answer about its Web development degree fee schedule and policies, choose another school.
How Much Are Web Development Degree Fees?
Beyond Web development tuition, you'll also have to pay for books, supplies, and software, which may cost about $7,000 total. Sometimes, books are included in the cost of tuition; if that's the case, a school may be affordable than you thought. Be sure to inquire about this possibility, as it's a several thousand dollar difference.
Other potential Web development degree fees include application, graduation, transcript, and exemption exam fees. You may also incur a software charge if you switch platforms (e.g., PC to Mac or Mac to PC) during your degree program
Since Macs tend to be the preferred platform of those who work on the Web, some schools may even require you to purchase a Mac as well as a particular software suite for your degree program. And if you're one of the few who's still dealing with dial-up, you'll need to upgrade to a DSL or cable modem to complete your degree requirements.
Web development degree costs add up. But consider the return on your investment: a Web development degree provides the structure and skills you'll need to become a confident architect of interactive, Web 2.0- savvy sites. Isn't that worth the price?
