Spa Therapy Careers

by Barbara Bellesi
Are you in search of a career that allows you to help people look and feel their best? Then consider getting the proper training in spa therapies, an industry that continues to grow as more and more individuals discover the healing benefits of massage, skin care, and beyond.

Many people consider a trip to the spa to be a luxury, but the rejuvenating effects of various treatments can elevate it to a necessity. While celebrities may spend top-dollar for exclusive stays at spas in exotic locales, there are plenty of day spas to keep regular folks pampered, too. The list of services will vary from spa to spa, but at most day spas clients can expect to find manicures, pedicures, facials, massage therapy, body wraps, and more. Many spas also offer cosmetic applications and consultations. Depending on the expertise of the licensed staff, spas also offer electrolysis and laser hair removal, as well as a variety of natural and artificial ways to keep men and women looking young and wrinkle-free.

Ahh... make people feel good about themselves with a career in spa therapies
A career in spa therapy is attractive on several levels. It can offer a flexible schedule, as many spas are open late into the evening and on weekends, offering many opportunities to build a client base. Another benefit is that spa therapists derive a lot of job satisfaction from making people relaxed and feeling good about themselves. Yet another plus is that there are different work environments to choose, as spas come in all shapes and sizes, from a luxurious oasis tucked away on an island to a sleek and modern facility in a large city, to a small day spa in a suburb.

Because so much of spa therapy deals with hygienic procedures like sterilization, spa therapists must be trained, licensed professionals in order to secure employment, particularly in practices such as skin care and - ouch! - waxing. Jobs in spa therapy abound, particularly if you are well-versed in some of the newest spa therapies and treatments, like eyelash extension and permanent makeup application.

Film and television stars are particularly eager to look their best on and off camera, which makes Hollywood a great place to forge a career in spa therapies, but there are certainly other employment options anywhere in the country. Health and beauty trends do tend to break out in large cities, but spa technicians can find work wherever there are people who need to relax and rejuvenate.

Spa therapies can be pricey, but they can make your clients feel like a million bucks. If you are good at what you do, you can expect to develop a following rather quickly, as spa patrons tend to be loyal to estheticians who leave them feeling at the top of the world. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, personal service workers make an average of $15 per hour, though if you are good at what you do, you can make more, as spa owners appreciate having capable staff members that attract a lasting clientele.

Want a career where it's easy to make clients happy? Spa therapy is the way to go. Spa therapists help make people feel wonderful literally from head to toe - or, in spa parlance, from shiatsu to pedicure.
